For 30 years, Courier Publications and/or VillageSoup has recognized the top Midcoast high school male and female athletes.

That again was the case for the 2019-20 school year as the media organization’s sports department whittled an extensive list of talented student-athletes to announce schoolboy and schoolgirl athletes of the year.

Students from Oceanside High School of Rockland, Camden Hills Regional High School of Rockport, Mount View High School of Thorndike, Belfast Area High School, Medomak Valley High School of Waldoboro, Vinalhaven School, North Haven Community School, Searsport District High School and Islesboro Central School are eligible for the media company's athlete-of-the-year honors.

This year’s schoolgirl athlete of the year was Camden Hills’ Kristina Kelly and the schoolboy athlete of the year was Medomak Valley’s Erik Benner (see separate stories on the honorees).

This year's athletes of the year receive a free year's subscription to The Courier-GazetteCamden Herald or The Republican Journal or a free year's membership to the VillageSoup Knox or Waldo websites.

The following are the winners of the distinction, but keep in mind, before 2009-10, only Knox and Lincoln county student-athletes were recognized. In recent years, the notables have come from Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties:
