Thorndike — The Mount View and Waterville high school boys basketball teams had trouble getting into an offensive rhythm in the opening game of the regular season on Tuesday night, Jan. 12.

And in a campaign that began roughly six weeks behind schedule due to COVID-19 and has seen significant changes — the most noticeable being no spectators, that all participants must wear face masks and there being no traditional playoffs or champions crowned — few could fault either club for being sluggish out of the gate.

But by the time the second half rolled around, the well-conditioned Mustangs had run the undermanned Purple Panthers out of the building, as the hosts galloped to a lopsided 74-35 victory.

Mount View held a 12-6 lead after the first quarter and moved to a 26-14 advantage at halftime, but seized control of the game in the third quarter by going on a devastating 32-5 run — including 25 unanswered points —to take a 58-19 advantage heading into the final stanza.

Draedyn Furrow led the Mount View attack with a 20-point effort, while Tyler Russell dumped in 18; Declan Knowlton, 10; Sean Raven and Joe Grassi, eight; Noah Hurd, six; Wyatt Evensen, three; and Isaac Ellis, one.

Logan Tardif paced Waterville with 12 points, while Spencer Minihan added eight; Jace Bryan, five; Asher Grazulis and Billy Place, three; and Joe Hamelin and Liam Von Oesen, two.

The Mustangs finished 2-of-12 (17 percent) from the foul line, while the Purple Panthers were 7-of-11 (63 percent), including a perfect 6-of-6 in the fourth quarter.

Mount View got baskets from Grassi and Furrow to start, but a 3-pointer by Waterville — which dressed only nine players, three of whom also played in the preceding junior varsity game — cut the visitors deficit to one. The hosts rattled off eight straight points before a Purple Panther trey just before the buzzer rounded out the first-quarter scoring.

In the second half, Waterville had trouble penetrating Mount View’s interior defense, and settled for many outside shots that missed the mark. The Mustang defense also forced a multitude of second-half turnovers, many of which resulted in fast, transition baskets.

Tardif started the third quarter with a 3-pointer for the visitors, but the hosts used their lightning-quick defense and strong transition game to run off 25 straight points to put the game on ice.

Russell sliced to the hole for a quick score after Tardif’s basket, followed by Grassi scoring unguarded underneath and Knowlton converting an offensive putback after a steal by Furrow.

Furrow and Russell scored on back-to-back possessions and, after Furrow missed the second of two free throws, he got his offensive rebound long off the iron and converted, to put the hosts up 39-17.

The key sequence of the stanza saw Raven hit a 3-pointer, followed by an endline violation by Waterville inbounding the ball — which resulted in another trey, this time by Furrow — to put the ‘Stangs ahead 45-17.

Knowlton's baseline jumper, followed by layups from Furrow and Hurd, concluded the scoring run before Bryan's layup for the visitors made it 51-19 with about 1:50 to go in the quarter.
