Belfast — Game Loft students learned to create healthy meals this summer in a new program run by retired chefs.

“Food is essential for life, and learning how to make nourishing food has become an essential part of growing up, which is why the Game Loft introduced the ‘I Love Food’ program this summer,” said Game Loft co-founder and Director Patricia Estabrook in a press release.

“I Love Food” expands on the nutritious meals the Game Loft serves daily to give its young participants a turn in the kitchen. Run by retired chefs Sally Lewis-Lamonica and Charlie Lamonica, the cooking class introduced Waldo County students to the basics of food shopping, knife skills, nutrition, food safety, and presentation.

The students completed their course by serving dinner to 25 Game Loft members in a Friday night program called “Celebrity Chefs.” Graduating from the “I Love Food” program were: Emma Cullen, Tyson Downs, Alden Bair, Eddie Mylen, Henry Saggesse and Gerald Womack.

Members of the community are encouraged to volunteer at the Game Loft as Celebrity Chefs. Every Friday, volunteers come to the Game Loft to prepare a meal for up to 25 hungry gamers. Celebrity Chefs can contribute their own food or use supplies from the Game Loft.

“The youth appreciate all kinds of food,” Estabrook said, “and have come to understand what James Beard, the famous chef and food critic, said, ‘Food is our common ground, a universal experience.’”

The Game Loft’s food programs are supported by Good Shepherd Food Bank, Bangor Federal Credit Union, Hannaford Supermarkets, USDA’s Summer Food Service Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program, Belfast Co-op, True North Farm and Delvino’s Restaurant.
