Belfast — The fire that gutted the interior of Goose River Grocery in July was intentionally set and remains under investigation, according to police.

Belfast police and fire departments responded to the store, which is located at 77 Swan Lake Ave., at 9:03 p.m. July 15 after receiving multiple reports that the building was on fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 10 to 15 minutes, but not before the interior of the building was gutted.

Kyle Skinner, who is in the process of purchasing the store with his wife Helen, said the fire destroyed large equipment in the building, buckled the floors and burned through the roof. Water from storms that moved through the area in the past few weeks had also infiltrated the building, according to previously published reports.

The fire marshal's office determined the blaze was intentionally started and police are conducting an investigation into the arson, according to a press release from the Belfast Police Department.
