Hammon Buck and Dawn Buck, owners of Plants Unlimited, will be opening their Ornamental Grass Trials and Collection at their residence at 17 Elm Street in South Thomaston on Saturday September 20 and Sunday September 21st. The gardens will be open10:00 am to 4:00 pm both days.

Currently planted with over 120 ornamental grasses, the gardens were begun in 2012. This is a great opportunity to see many grasses in their third year of growth and see many flowering now. Generally, ornamental grasses "sleep" the first year with minimal growth, "creep" the second year as roots begin to spread and there is more pronounced top growth and "leap" the third year as they reach maturity. Currently the garden has several varieties that have reached 5' in height, Miscanthus gigantues which is currently over 8' tall a swell as many low growing shade and ornamental varieties.

Buck considers grasses an easy plant to grow. They don't need fertilizer, generally have no pest or disease problems, are deer resistant and have fantastic flowers and foliage. Generally the only care is to cut them back to ground level in the spring.

Visitors will receive a list of current grasses and Hammon Buck will be on hand to answer your questions. Buck will also offer over 25 varieties to purchase.

The Grass Trials are located at 17 Elm Street, route 73, in South Thomaston directly across from the Weaskeag Inn and adjacent to the Library and Historical Society. Please park at the Library or Town Landing parking lots only. Do not use the Keag Store or  Inn parking.
