Green Homes Lecture 10/19: Renewable Energy and the New Normal

Photo by: Brian Robinson Learn how this "new normal" home stopped wasting energy - and money - at the Renewable Energy Green Homes Lecture on Wednesday, Oct 19 from 6-8 pm.

Brian Robinson’s house looks pretty normal.  The classic, family-friendly Cape fits perfectly into the Maine landscape, and sits lightly on the land thanks to a series of straightforward projects that have dramatically reduced unnecessary energy waste.

“You don’t need to radically alter your lifestyle or the aesthetics of your home to make a major difference,” says Robinson.

Solar collectors mounted on the back roof are the most visible sign that the Robinson home is part of the new normal: green technology in classic, sometimes centuries-old, homes.  Along with additional insulation, programmable thermostats, and ultra low flow showerheads, the solar hot water system has helped the Robinsons cut their energy use by half.

Evergreen Home Performance invites the public to learn about solar technology and high efficiency heating systems during the Green Homes Lecture Series, Wednesdays in October from 6 to 8 pm at Evergreen’s office, 15 Tillson Ave, Rockland.

John Luft of ReVision Energy, which installed the solar hot water system at the Robinsons’ house, will explain how solar energy works and the types of solar energy-driven systems available.  “It works so well,” said Robinson.  “We take hot showers, we run the dishwasher, we use warm water in the washing machine – and we always have enough hot water.”

In addition to solar energy, Lee Landry of ReVision Heat will discuss high efficiency boilers, including biomass boilers, and explain how to choose a new heating system or optimize an exisiting one.

Green Homes Lectures, including the Renewable Energy session, are free, but pre-registration is requested.  Please call 594-2244 or email
