Hall Bridge to get needed repairs

Brooks — A handful of residents made short work of a two-article warrant at a July 20 special town meeting authorizing selectmen to spend about $135,000 to fix Hall Bridge.

Town Clerk Jane McLaughlin said about 15 residents attended the special meeting to approve two articles on the warrant. The first article asked residents to give selectmen permission to spend $135,438.10 for repairs to the bridge on Valley Road. Of that amount, $25,000 was approved at this year’s annual town meeting and the remaining $110,438.10 represents funds reimbursed to the town from the state for a salt/sand shed.

Residents also approved an article allowing selectmen to hire a contractor without having to put the project out to bid. Town officials sought approval to sidestep the bid process because the bridge’s condition has deteriorated more quickly than anticipated and they want to complete the work as soon as possible.

Repair work is expected to take about a week, McLaughlin said, and needs to be completed before mid-September.
