Hard-working Lions look to kick to pitch success

Belfast — The following is a synopsis of the 2017 Belfast Area High School girls soccer team:

Coach/years coached current team: Chris Lavalle, 12th year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 0-14, 18th in Class B North. The Lions failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Roster: Seniors Olivia Lovejoy (midfield), Alison DeFeo (defense), Kinley Friend (midfield) and Amber Beaulieu (sweeper, midfield); juniors Angela Rogers (midfield, defense), Payge Shute (midfield), Elisabeth Taylor (midfield), Mackenzy Whitcomb (midfield) and Shera Hilt (goalie, midfield); sophomores Caitlin Friel (midfield), Junne Robertson-McIntire (midfield), Alicia Berube (stopper), Olivia Matthews (midfield), Sydni Moores (defense, goalie), Oceana Pacholski-Proctor (defense), Grace Fitzjurls (midfield) and Lindsey Cross (stopper, defense); and freshmen Lindsey Goughnour (stopper, midfield), Summer Deans (midfield), Sierra Moores (midfield, defense), Sarah Fuller (midfield), Jasmine Cunningham (defense), Anna Metcalf (midfield) and Leah Marriner (defense, midfield).

Known graduation losses: Faith Beaulieu, Eliot Ripley and Rayahna Luther.

Significant impact athletes: Hilt and Robertson-McIntire.

Team strengths: Chemistry and work ethic.

Team goals: To work hard, have fun and get better at the end of each day.

Top league opponents: Waterville, Nokomis of Newport, Winslow, Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield and Mount View of Thorndike.

Outlook: “Coming off an 0-14 season, it is hard to get overly optimistic about the team's outlook this season,” said Lavalle. “However, it is easy to see significant improvement in each of my girls every day, and this gives me optimism about the future of the program. I do think that we have the opportunity, if all goes well, to be competitive in many of the matches we play this season.”
