Belfast — The youthful Belfast football team undoubtedly has had a tough season, but hoped to turn things around for its homecoming game against Hermon on Friday night, Oct. 6 at Dennis “Bear” Bryant Field.

However, the Lions could not keep pace with the sustained Hawk ground attack as the visitors slowly pulled away in the second half en route to a 39-12 high school victory.

Jordan Bishop rushed for 137 yards and one touchdown for Hermon, while Garrett Trask rushed for 100 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.

Dylan Abbott passed for 142 yards under center for Belfast, while Grey Dinsmore had 97 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Hermon took a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter when Trask scampered through the Belfast defense for a 20-yard touchdown with 59.8 remaining, but led only 6-0 after the Hawks had their extra point attempt blocked by the Lion defense.

Belfast then rallied to tie the game 6-6 after an eight-yard touchdown screen pass from Dylan Abbott to Grey Dinsmore with 7:56 to play in the half. The Lions took advantage of a few offsides penalties and also converted a fourth down on a fake punt on that drive.

But the Hawks pulled ahead for good when Tyler Carmichael hauled in a long touchdown pass with 6:19 left in the half.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Belfast (0-6, no points) is 11th, while Mount Desert Island (5-1, 101.5625 points) is first in the 11-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
