Help out, come out for February FUNraiser in Belfast

Jan 30, 2020
Be part of the FUNraiser's fashion show costume creation days Feb. 1 and 8.

Belfast — Get a taste of Fiber, Fashion, Folk, Funk & Foraged Food at the February FUNraiser on Friday, Feb. 14, from 4 to 11 p.m. at the Belfast American Legion Hall, 143 Church St.

The schedule is as follows: Work Songs with Bennett Konesni, Nature & Fiber Arts for all ages at 4 p.m.; Local Fare & Foraged Finger Foods, Heart Art, Poetry & Chocolate at 5 p.m.; Farm & Forest Fiber Flannel Runway Fashion Show at 5:55 p.m.; Contra Dance with The Love Bugs, and John McIntire calling at 7 p.m.; and Funk Dance Party with Bottomed-Out Funk at 9 p.m.

Help make outfits for the Farm & Forest Fiber Flannel Runway Fashion Show Saturdays, Feb. 1 and 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Belfast Fiberarts Studio, 171 High St. Artists, dancers, craftspeople, working people and those of all ages are needed.

The fashion show is a celebration of the working people, land and water of Midcoast Maine. It will open with someone offering a land and water blessing, and sharing about the history of Wabanaki people on this land. There will be a giant snail moving across the runway very slowly with a sign reading "Slow Fashion." When the snail reaches the other side, the show will be over. There will be people wearing flannel shirts and pajamas dancing, farmers and artists carrying tools of their trades, folks in deerskin, an Evergreen Queen, giant vegetables, local knitted woolens, bark, shells, seaweed — whatever participants and organizers dream up.

Interested in making a costume on your own, already have a hand-knitted or hide garment, or want to be a model? Contact Chelsea at the information below.

Even more prep work for the FUNraiser is needed! Come cook together and make art Thursdays, Feb. 6 and 13, at First Baptist Church, 95 High St.  Cooking is 10 a.m. to noon, then a break for lunch, and heart art from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Come to either or both. Make tasty savory and sweet finger foods with local and foraged ingredients, and rose chocolates, to sell at the FUNraiser. Everyone will get to sample what they make, and have recipes to take home. Attendees will also make large paper maché decorations, heart snowflakes, and whatever else people come up with. Heart Art will be displayed at the event. All ages are welcome. Free, but registration is required; contact Chelsea at the information below.

Sliding scale costs for the Feb. 14 event are $5 to $50. All ages and abilities welcome. All proceeds go toward Belfast Adventure Education's start-up funds, biodiesel solar bus fund and scholarship fund. Belfast Adventure Education is a three-day homeschool enrichment program learning through place-based skill building, community connections, lived experience, and integration through the arts.
