Hensley co-chairs Power of Words

Saco — The 14th annual Power of Words conference will be held Aug. 18 through 20 at Ferry Beach and will explore how we can use our words — written, spoken, or sung — to make community, deepen healing, witness one another, wake ourselves up and foster empowerment and transformation.

“This event promises to embody activism, spontaneity, humor, comfort and joy. I don’t know what thrills me more— this fabulous conference we’re putting together or the amazing place here in Maine where we are holding it,” said Deb Hensley of Belfast, Creative Coalition member and Power of Words conference co-chair.

The conference features workshops, performances, talking circles, celebration and more, featuring writers, storytellers, performers, musicians, community leaders, activists, educators and health professionals. The 2017 conference keynoters include Joseph Bruchac, storyteller, poet and author of books relating to the indigenous peoples of the Americas; early literacy author and professor Susan Bennet Armstead; poet, activist and curator Mahogany L. Browne; playback theater troupe True Story Theatre; and Americana singer/songwriter, Kelley Hunt, as musician-in-residence.
