Herard, Snape earn gold medals for Special Olympics tennis

Rockport — The Maine State Special Olympics Tennis Competition was held on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at the Midcoast Recreation Center.

Ninety-six Special Olympic athletes from around the state competed in Individual tennis skills.

Athletes were from Belfast, Camden, Auburn, Bangor, Boothbay, Millinocket, Casco and Windham. The competition consisted of seven individual tennis skills covering all of the strokes of tennis.

Athletes from the “Tennis For Fun “ program in Belfast won gold medals. Cody Herard earned the highest score of all athletes competing at the state competition. He had a perfect score in four of the seven skills competitions.

Dina Snape earned a gold medal in the 30+ age division.

“Tennis For Fun “ is a free tennis clinic for special needs athletes. The program is run entirely by volunteers. The Belfast clinics are held at Belfast City Park on Fridays from June through September.
