Herbig schedules Senate District 11 announcement

Dec 29, 2017

House Majority Leader Erin Herbig, D-Belfast, announced Dec. 27 she is hosting a "major press conference" Tuesday, Jan. 2, to comment on the race to replace term-limited Sen. Mike Thibodeau, R-Winterport, for Senate District 11.

Herbig posted a video featuring members of her family to her Facebook page teasing the announcement.

The Jan. 2 press conference will take place at 5 p.m. at the French and Webb Building, 7 Front St., Belfast.

In recent months, Herbig has declined to respond to repeated requests from The Journal for comment about the race or if she intends to run for the position.

According to the press release, as a fifth-generation descendant of Waldo County poultry farmers, Herbig has voiced support of rural Maine, family-friendly businesses and working families statewide.

She's sponsored legislation around rural communities abandoned by heritage industries, business tax credits for apprenticeship programs and other initiatives.

Leadership roles filled by Herbig during her eight-year tenure as the House District 97 representative, which includes Belfast, Northport and Waldo, include her current position as House majority leader, House chairman of the Legislature’s Workforce Development Committee and the Legislature’s Caucus on Aging. In addition, Herbig has served as House chairman of the Legislature’s Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee.

Herbig lives in Belfast with her husband Joe Baiungo and their children Anna and Charles.
