Belfast — Democrat Erin Herbig held a significant lead over Republican Jayne Giles in the race to represent Waldo County in the state Senate in the early morning hours of Nov. 7. The District 11 seat is being vacated by Republican Sen. Michael Thibodeau, Senate president, who reached his term limit after eight years.

Herbig, of Belfast, is finishing her fourth term representing District 97 in the Maine Legislature, where she is House majority leader. Giles, also of Belfast, held the same position from 2006 to 2010 and was succeeded by Herbig.

The race was one of several in the state eyed during the campaign as an opportunity for Democrats to take control of the Senate, which they did on Tuesday.

Herbig was not available for comment early Nov. 7 when The Republican Journal called the race in her favor. That afternoon, she posted about her win on Facebook, thanking her family and campaign volunteers, as well as Giles and election officials.

"I couldn’t be more proud to serve as Waldo County’s State Senator," Herbig wrote. "I am excited to continue my work for you all in our state’s capital."

Giles, speaking on Nov. 7, said she was disappointed with the results but proud of the work she and volunteers did during the campaign.

"Sometimes it's not your night, and last night wasn't mine," she said.

Giles said national political coverage, which hasn't been favorable to Republicans in the last six months, might have been a factor in her lopsided loss. She said she plans to continue her economic development consulting and her work with local nonprofit organizations, including Waldo County YMCA, Belfast Rotary and Broachreach Family & Community Services.

"I'll still be around and trying to do good work in Waldo County," she said.
