High school concert gets 'Spooktacular' in Searsport

Festive fundraisers help with trip cost
Oct 21, 2019

Searsport — On Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 6:30 p.m. Searsport District High School band and chorus members (SPA: Searsport Performing Arts) present their first annual Howl-o-ween Spooktacular Concert. The concert will be held in the SDHS Cafetorium, 24 Mortland Rd.

The concert will also serve as a kick-off fundraiser event for the SPA class. Pending board approval, the class is planning a trip to New York City during April school vacation to attend a live Broadway production of the award-winning musical “Dear Evan Hansen” and visit the Museum of Natural History. The musical is based on topics relevant to high school-aged students, such as cyberbullying, anxiety and social media.

The fundraising goal of $15,000 will allow all members of the class to participate without cost to the student or family. This goal amount covers show tickets, bus transportation, hotel, meals and tickets to the Museum of Natural History.

Concert admission is free, but donations and participation in fundraising events during the concert will be fun and gratefully appreciated.

Fundraising events at this concert include a best performer costume coin vote and student-carved pumpkins raffle. Refreshments will be sold during a brief intermission. A donation bottle will also be available.

Contest and raffle information:

Performers will be in costume as they entertain guests with seasonally-inspired music. Attendees will be invited to cast votes for best costume, using coins as ballots. There is no limit to how many votes may be cast. The costume collecting the highest cash votes will be declared the winner. Results will be posted on Wednesday, Oct. 30. All funds collected will be applied to the trip.

Student-carved pumpkins will serve as decor during the event and will be raffled off at the end of the concert. Raffle tickets will be sold before the concert and at intermission. Raffle tickets are $5 each for a carved, “ready for your porch” pumpkin! All funds collected will be applied to the trip.

A trick or treat costume parade will end the evening. Guests are invited to bring a bag or two of individually wrapped candy to hand out during the hallway costume parade. Guests younger than 12 are invited to wear costumes. Children in costumes must follow the same guidelines given the performers: no masks (face paint is acceptable), nothing too gory, and nothing revealing or ‘sexy’ out of respect for all in attendance. There will be a quick costume parade across the stage at the end of the concert and will then form a trick-or-treat lineup in the hallway.

Donations for this trip may be made at any time prior to March 1, 2020. Checks payable to SDHS-SPA may be mailed to: SDHS-SPA, Attn: V. Cox, 24 Mortland Rd., Searsport, ME 04974.
