Historic photo: Biggest little city

Jul 17, 2017

In 1915 a large sign was placed at the foot of Commercial Street, opposite the steamship pier. It was painted and placed in position by Walter “Ding” Clifford, Belfast sign-maker. The newspaper article extols the sign as a good example of civic pride by the Belfast Board of Trade and states the sign could be “plainly seen from the water and every craft which now comes into the harbor of Belfast, cannot but read this inscription, seen in massive letters: 'This is Belfast, The Biggest Little City in Maine.'"
