Home sweet home: Vikings rout Tigers for doubleheader sweep

In Class C North playoff pictures, Searsport teams combine to outscore Shead 133-70

Searsport — For the second time in a week, Searsport and Shead of Eastport met on the high school hardwood, this time in Waldo County on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 12, as one basketball game represented almost a copy of the first, while the other script was flipped.

Searsport squads were victorious, as the boys won in convincing fashion for the second straight time, 77-32, and the girls inacted revenge on the Tigers, 56-38.

The Vikings and Tigers also met on Saturday, Jan. 5 in Eastport, as the Searsport boys prevailed 76-38, while the girls fell 43-37.

Girls basketball

Searsport 56, Shead 38

At Searsport Jan. 12, the Vikings trailed early, but a strong second quarter lifted the hosts to victory.

The Vikings trailed 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, scored 24 points in the second stanza to lead 36-23 at halftime, and led 44-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Ashten Wells keyed the Vikings with 19 points, while Mikaela Alley added 15; Makenzie Alley, 10; Abby Stemp, nine; Abby Astbury, two; and Morgan Ireland, one.

Ryleigh Andrews led the Tigers with 19 points, while Halle Sullivan chipped in with eight; Justine Cheney, five; Kiesha Scott, four; and Teryn Smith, two.

Searsport made six 3-pointers, as Stemp hit three in the second quarter, Mikaela Alley made two, and Wells one.

Shead hit two treys, both from Sullivan.

The Vikings were 12-of-24 (50 percent) from the free-throw line, while the Tigers were 4-of-20 (20 percent) from the charity stripe.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Searsport (6-4, 17.2222 points) is 12th, while Dexter (7-2, 38.3333 points) is first in the 20-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Boys basketball

Searsport 77, Shead 32

At Searsport, Jan. 12, the Vikings' offense clicked on all cylinders and made short work of the Tigers.

The Vikings led 17-9 after the first quarter, poured in 33 points in the second stanza to lead 50-14 at halftime, and led 69-19 at the end of the third quarter.

Charlie Spiegel led Searsport with 14 points, all in the first half, while Colby Snow added 13; Isaiah Runci, 12; George Dakin, nine; Gabe Kneeland, Josh Wright and Dustin Hall, seven; Aaron Wiley, five; and Toby Kroening, two.

Devon Wilder ignited the Tigers with nine points, as Damien Lank chipped in seven; Austin Ashby, five; Damien Downes, Trevor Fenderson and Antonio Viscarrondo, three; and Devon Morison, two.

The Vikings made eight treys, as Runci hit two, and Kneeland, Wright, Hall, Wiley, Kroening and Dakin one.

Shead netted four 3-pointers, as Lank, Downes, Wilder and Viscarrondo made one.

Searsport was 9-of-16 (56 percent) from the foul-line, while Shead was 4-of-13 (30 percent).

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Searsport (5-5, 10.1466 points) is 13th, while Central Aroostook (9-1, 44.3355 points) is first in the 20-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.
