Hope for the Bruised and Faint -  Adam Kohlstrom

Matthew 12:15-21; Isaiah 42:1-4

“Advent” comes from the Latin word adventus meaning 'Coming.' The season of Advent is a time for preparing for Christ's Second coming, even as we remember and celebrate His First coming at Christmas. What does Advent mean to you? How do you prepare during Advent?

Share about a time in your life when you struggled to hope.

Matthew 12:20 (Isaiah 42:3). Have you ever felt like a “bruised reed” or a “smoldering wick”? In His ministry, how did Jesus respond to the abused and hopeless (cf. Matthew 9:36; 11:28)?

Matthew 12:20. The gentle compassion of Jesus is contrasted with the crushing mercilessness of the Pharisees (Matthew 12:10,14). How did Jesus respond to the bruised and faint (Matthew 12:11-13,15)? How do Jesus’ actions fulfill the prophets and writings (cf. Isaiah 61:1; Psalm 147:3)?

Matthew 12:18,20. Jesus and His followers proclaimed to the nations the gospel (good news) of a coming justice when wrongs will be set right, the oppressor silenced, the bruised healed. How does the name of Jesus bring hope today?

What do you think is the significance that ours is a “living” hope (1Pet. 1:3)?
