Hope Rising — Pastor Adam Kohlstrom

Scripture: Matthew 1:18-23

December 1, 2019

Try using this Discovery Bible Study format in Home Groups,

Discipleship Groups, one-on-one Bible reading with Christian

or non-Christian friends, as families around the dinner table,

before bedtime with your children, etc.

OPENING

o What are you thankful for? What good things have

happened to you since we last met?

o What challenges are you facing? Assign someone to pray

for each. (Are there ways the group might practically

support one another through these challenges?)

o If last time we met you made an “I will” statement, how did

you do? Did you share the last lesson with the person you

said you would? How did it go?

o Pray together. People assigned to pray for specific

challenges should pray about them. Be sure to include both

thanksgiving as well as intercession.

DISCOVER

o Read the passage out loud together twice – the first time

with everyone looking at the text, the second time

just listening to the text.

o Briefly rewrite / retell / restate the passage in your own

words.

o What does this story tell us about God?

o What does this story tell us about people?

o What strikes you personally about this passage?

o In the next 72 hours, what will you do (or start doing) in light

of the passage? Use the form of an “I will” statement.

Example: “I will [ACTION] at [TIME] in [LOCATION].”

• S: Is there a Sin to avoid?

• P: Is there a Promise to claim or a Prayer or Praise to

offer?

• E: Is there an Example to follow (or avoid following)?

• C: Is there a Command to obey?

• K: Is there Knowledge to learn?

o With whom will I share what I have learned from this

passage?

o Close praying together about the things learned and

commitments made.
