Liberty — A cold water rescue ended with emergency responders pulling a horse from a frigid stream Sunday morning.

Liberty Fire Chief Bill Gillespie said a horse wandered onto the ice on a stream adjacent to Trues Pond in Liberty and broke through around 9 a.m.

A neighbor with a tractor was able to pull the animal closer to shore, he said.

Several firefighters along with the animal control officer then used an ice rescue suits to get in the water and help the horse out of the muck. Once the horse was on shore, emergency responders wrapped towels and blankets around the animal to keep it warm.

Crews then spent about an hour trying to get the horse back on its feet.

According to Liberty Animal Control Officer Heidi Anderson Blood, Marla is an elderly horse known as a Houdini of sorts, having figured out how to get loose and wander around the neighborhood.

The horse’s owner had just come in from feeding her when a neighbor called and said she saw her on the river.

“The next 48 hours will tell,” Blood said. “It was touch and go for a while. The horse was in the water for about an hour and a half.

“I am very thankful we live in a small community where we can call each other,” Blood said, and commended the Liberty Fire Department for all their hard work. “This was a tough one.”
