Humility -  Adam Kohlstrom

Luke 18:9-30

Luke 18:9-14. Why is so easy to drift into pride and moral superiority? How can we guard against moral superiority without just overlooking immorality?

Luke 18:14. In your own words, how would you define humility? In what ways to do you see this culture encourage, and even reward, pride?

1 Peter 5:5-6 calls us to “clothe ourselves with humility” for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (Prov. 3:34). Why do you think the humble alone receive “grace”?

Luke 18:15-17. Why does the Kingdom of God belong to “such as these”? What wrong idea about the Kingdom do the disciples show by rebuking the parents? How might we be guilty of doing the same? How can we better welcome children into the Kingdom? What is the difference between being childlike and childish? How do you need to be more childlike toward God?

18:18. This ruler asks the most important question of all. However, what false assumptions does his question reveal?

18:20. Read the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17). List the commandments that Jesus leaves out. What is the significance of the commandments Jesus chose to list and to leave out?

18:18-20. “…what must I do…” Since Romans 3:20 and Galatians 2:16 make clear that none will be justified by “doing” the law, Jesus holds up the law as a mirror. What does the ruler fail to see or acknowledge?

18:22. An empty bank account cannot save. What was Jesus really asking of the ruler? By his refusal, what was revealed about the ruler’s heart?

18:26-27. Why is salvation is not only “hard” but “impossible” without God?

18:28-30. Considering Peter’s question and Jesus’ reply, what is the cost and benefit of following Jesus? How do these words give you joy?
