Unity — There was every kind of weather imaginable at the fifth annual T-Pot Memorial Fishing Derby at Unity Pond March 3. Snow, rain, sleet and a huge gale did not keep anglers from drilling holes, setting up traps and having fun on the lake.

By 10:30 a.m. there were a least 200 participants, according to event coordinator and Unity Fire Chief Blaine Parsons.

An impressive list of area sponsors donated many prizes. First prize for largest fish caught was a Jiffy ice auger, won by John Beckett with a 22-inch bass. A second ice auger was won as a door prize by James Roy of Burnham. Other prizes included ice-fishing sleds, cast iron dutch ovens, a bob house propane heater, tackle boxes and ice-fishing traps.

The 50/50 raffle had a total dollar amount of $538. The winning ticket pulled was D. Foster with $269 take-home winnings. The winner was not on hand, but many from the audience claimed to know the winner and would facilitate delivering the money.

The winning participants in the kids' division were Collin Jones with a 19.5-inch bass weighing in at 3.08 pounds. He also had a 24.25-inch pickerel weighing in at 3.01 pounds. Luke Lawrence brought in a 11.125-inch perch weighing in at 10.88 ounces and Sam Curtis had a 13-inch crappie weighing in at 1.03 pounds. There were no trout caught in the kids' division.

Winners in the adult division were Richard Higgins, who brought in an 11-inch trout weighing in at 10.08 ounces and a 25.125-inch pickerel weighing 4.64 pounds; John Beckett caught a 22-inch bass weighing 6.02 pounds and a 12.5-inch crappie weighing in at 14.72 ounces. John Grignon caught an 11.5-inch perch weighing 10.72 ounces.

The derby is in memory of Blaine Parsons Sr. and his love of hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors with family and friends. All proceeds help fund Unity Fire Department operations.
