Searsport — Friends of Sears Island will host a nature walk, “Common Medicinal Plants for the Family Medicine Cabinet,” on Saturday, July 22, from 10 a.m. to noon. The program will be led by clinical herbalists Steve Byers and Gretchen Heilman Piper.

This event is free and open to the public, and children are welcome. Explore Sears Island and learn about the variety of medicinal trees, shrubs, and plants on the island, including native and invasive species. Dosage, time of harvest, and proper identification will be discussed, as well as plant conservation and sustainable harvest.

Directions: Turn off Route 1 onto Sears Island Road and meet at the kiosk near the island gate by 10 a.m. Wear footwear appropriate for walking in the woods and on the beach, and clothing to protect against ticks and the weather. Bring water, a snack, and insect repellent. No pets, please. In the event of steady rain, the program will be cancelled.
