Belfast — Learn the essentials of Della Robbia Design, using the bounty of the fields, at a Belfast Garden Club talk Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Belfast Free Library.

Presenter Lynne Holland, who coordinates master gardener volunteers in two counties for University of Maine Cooperative Extension, will discuss this decorating style that dates back to the 15th century.

Its name derives from Luca della Robbia, an Italian sculptor known for terra cotta work in which religious figures were surrounded by fruits, vegetables and leaves. Della Robbia passed his technique along to his nephews and great-nephews.

Holland will show holiday arrangements made in this design style that can last up to a month. She has extensive knowledge of ornamental horticulture, with experience in mass-market floral operations, purchasing and sales.
