LeMole brothers, Jolliffe, Cooper, O'Brien advance in MPA tourney

Court athletes from Oceanside, Camden Hills, Medomak Valley, Belfast, Islseboro compete

Augusta — A handful of Midcoast high school tennis players took their first steps toward individual court supremacy on Saturday, May 11 as the Maine Principals’ Association singles qualifiers swung in at sites throughout the state.

For area racket athletes, 19 from Camden Hills, Belfast, Oceanside, Medomak Valley and Islesboro took to the courts in an effort to qualify for the prestigious state singles tournament, dubbed the Round of 48, playing one to three matches in prelim, second and/or qualifying rounds.

By day’s end, five of the 19 players proved a cut above the rest and ran the gamut to advance to the state tournament, which will begin on Friday, May 24 at Lewiston High School.

Camden Hills Ezra LeMole, Henry Cooper and Charlie O’Brien, along with Oceanside’s Abe LeMole and Belfast’s Eli Jolliffe, qualified for the Round of 48 on the boys side, while no area girls made the cut.

Ezra LeMole and Abe LeMole are brothers who happen to attend different local high schools.

The prelim and second-round matches are eight-game pro sets, while the final, qualifying round consists of best two-of-three tiebreak sets.

Belfast and Islesboro players participated in Region 2 with matches at sites in Brewer, Hermon, Hampden, Old Town and Bangor; while players from Oceanside, Camden Hills and Medomak Valley players participated in Region 3 at Brunswick High School.

For the individual state tournament, Ezra LeMole is ranked eighth and Abe LeMole 11th, while Jolliffe, Cooper and O'Brien are not ranked.

Ezra LeMole receives a bye in the Round of 48 and will await the winner of the match between Freeport's Weston Goodwin and Brunswick's Connor Shaw in the Round of 32, which will be played Friday, May 24 at 2 p.m.

Abe LeMole receives a bye in the Round of 48 and will await the winner of the match between Lee Academy's Dat Duong and Falmouth's Matthew Ray in the Round of 32, which will be on Friday, May 24 at 5 p.m.

Jolliffe receives a bye in the Round of 48 and will await the winner of the match between George Stevens Academy's Kaito Fang and Lewiston's Ben St. Laurent in the Round of 32, which will be played on Friday, May 24 at 6:15 p.m.

Cooper will face Orono's Ita Boss in the Round of 48 on Friday, May 24 at 9:45 a.m., while O'Brien will face Yarmouth's Archie McDonough in the Round of 48 on Friday, May 24 at 11:15 a.m.

Boys

Camden Hills

In the second round, Ezra LeMole beat Reed Hopkins, Cony, 8-0; and, in the qualifying round, beat Henry Drapeau, Boothbay Region, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the Round of 48.

In the second round, Cooper beat Jorge Pulido Fernandez, Lincoln Academy, 8-4; and, in the qualifying round, beat Arthur Taylor, Gardiner, 6-3, 7-6 (1), to advance to the Round of 48.

In the second round, O’Brien beat Bobby Clarkson, Boothbay Region, 8-1; and, in the qualifying round, beat Alex Stewart, Cony, 7-6 (1), 6-2, to advance to the Round of 48.

Oceanside

In the prelim round, Carter Fogarty lost to Bobby Clarkson, Boothbay Region, 4-8.

In the prelim round, Brady Marchessault lost to Henry Drapeau, Boothbay Region, 7-9.

In the second round, Abe LeMole beat Seth Main, Messalonskee, 8-1; and, in the qualifying round, beat Zach Cheesman, MV, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the Round of 48.

Medomak Valley

In the prelim round, Alec Coughlin beat Matt Brown, Lawrence, 8-5; and, in the second round, lost to Connor Shaw, Brunswick, 3-8.

In the second round, Coleman Swain beat Luke Curnin, Mount Ararat, 8-5; and, in the qualifying round, lost to Dawson Turcotte, Skowhegan, 4-6, 2-6.

In the second round, Zach Cheesman won by forfeit and, in the qualifying round, lost to Abe LeMole, Oceanside, 1-6, 0-6.

Belfast

In the prelim round, Max Lewis beat Keegan Grey, Ellsworth, 8-2; and lost to Connor Lee, Bangor, 2-8.

In the second round, Jolliffe beat Jack Prior, Bangor, 9-7; and, defeated Reider Watson, Mount Desert Island, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the Round of 48.

Islesboro

In the second round, Chase Cook lost to a John Bapst player (score unavailable).

Girls

Camden Hills

In the prelim round, Olivia Lydon lost to Katherine Boston, Cony, 4-8.

In the second round, Chloe Fordyce beat Elena Guarino, Messalonskee, 8-5; and, in the qualifying round, lost to Emily Harris, Lincoln Academy, 3-6, 2-6.

Medomak Valley

In the prelim round, Claire Bourette lost to Anna Sanchez, Temple Academy, 3-8.

In the second round, Chloe Blake lost to Katherine Boston, Cony, 1-8.

In the second round, Sadie Cohen lost to Mandy Cooper, Cony, 7-9.

Belfast

In the prelim round, Emily Woods lost to Miriam Nelson, Ellsworth, 0-8.

In the second round, Clarisse Stradtman lost to Alexis Morrarty, Brewer, 8-9 (6-8).
