Lions record rare recent links win over rival Mustangs

Belfast 2-2 on young season, Mount View drops to 0-4

Northport — Waldo County’s richest high school athletic rivalry on the links was renewed on Friday, Sept. 1 as Mount View of Thorndike traveled to Northport Golf Club — the home course of Belfast Area High School — to square off with the Lions in a nine-hole showdown.

Of course, of late, one could equate the rivalry the Mustangs and Lions have on the course to that of the rivalry a hammer has with a nail, as Mount View has had the upper hand against Belfast for the better part of the past five years.

That all changed on the par-36 course on Friday afternoon as the Lions roared to their second win in four matches, this time with a dominating 9-0 win over the ‘Stangs.

The last known win Belfast had against Mount View was on Sept. 19, 2011 — also a 9-0 win — at Northport.

"I have always looked forward to our golf matches with Mount View," said Belfast coach Chip Lagerbom, who announced prior to the start of the season that this year would be his last as the Lion coach. "They have always been fun gatherings whether we are at Northport Golf Course or at Country View. Team-wise, we always match up well. Many of the Belfast kids regularly play at Country View and know each other. For a few years there, they did seem to have our number. But this year we're trending in the right direction. Our players have been working hard on improving their golf game, so it was nice to notch a win for Belfast against them."

The individual match results from Friday, with Lion golfers listed first, were: Tommy Walker (47) beat Jordan Roux (58), Hunter Simmons (54) beat Jacob Rose (61), Kristina Walker (56) beat John Clifford (78), Alexia Sweet (48) beat Lucas Ford (81), Chance Clark (52) beat Chase Roberts (76) and Artem Richter (50) won by forfeit over Mount View.

Walker was the medalist for the round, firing a 47 on the day.
