Lions sweep midweek home tri-meet to open new year

Belfast controls MCI, Gardiner in dual-match victories

Belfast — As the calendar read 2019, the Belfast wrestling team wasted no time as it secured its first wins of the new year in a home tri-meet on Wednesday night, Jan. 2.

The Lions dominated Gardiner 66-6 and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 54-11, to pick up two high school mat wins, to bring the Lions' dual-match record to 8-2.

The individual Belfast results, with Lion wrestlers listed first, were:

106 pounds — Connor Fournier won by forfeit over Gardiner and MCI.

120 pounds — Timothy Smith pinned Evan Grady, Gar; and won by forfeit over MCI.

138 pounds — Jonah Lovejoy pinned James Rinderknecht, Gar; and lost by technical fall to Cole Steeves, MCI.

145 pounds — Oceana Pacholski-Proctor won by forfeit over Gardiner. Isaac Ham won by forfeit over MCI.

152 pounds — Isaac Ham pinned Devyn Purington, Gar. Elijah Charbonnier pinned Trenton Basford, MCI.

160 pounds — Elijah Charbonnier won by forfeit over Gardiner.

170 pounds — Nathaniel Porter pinned Elijah Burns, Gar; and won by forfeit over MCI.

182 pounds — Jason Norwood won by forfeit over Gardiner; and pinned Bryce Brussell, MCI.

195 pounds — Brian White won by forfeit over Gardiner; and pinned Shelby Ostrowski, MCI.

220 pounds — Cameron Watts won by forfeit over Gardiner and MCI.

285 pounds — Gage Newcomb won by forfeit over Gardiner; and pinned Kahlden Briggs, MCI.
