Lions wrangle sixth-place finish in regional championship

Six Belfast mat athletes finish among top four in weight classes to earn state berths

Ellsworth — Wrestling always has been a strong athletic suit at Belfast Area High School and that trend continued on Saturday, Feb. 9 in the Class B North championships at Ellsworth High School.

The Lions pinned down a sixth-place finish, with 95 points, and had six wrestlers stand out among the many talented individuals in attendance.

Cameron Watts (1st at 220 pounds), Jason Norwood (2nd at 182), Jonah Lovejoy (3rd at 138), Elijah Charbonnier (3rd at 160), Brian White (3rd at 195) and Nathaniel Porter (4th at 170) finished among the top four in their weight classes and qualified for the state Class B championships on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 9:30 a.m. at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln.

The Class B North team scores were: Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 169.5, Dexter 148.5, Mattanawcook Academy 103, Piscataquis of Guilford 100, Bucksport 96.5, Belfast 95, Ellsworth 71, John Bapst of Bangor 42, Fort Kent 41.5, Washington Academy of East Machias 27, Penobscot Valley of Howland 25, Calais 23, Bangor Christian of Bangor 22, Caribou 19, Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor 14, Lee Academy 5 and Sumner no score.

The individual Belfast results, with Lion wrestlers listed first, were:

106 pounds — Connor Fournier received a first-round bye; was pinned by Jaren Hartt, FK, at 4:22; pinned Ethan Edgecomb, Car, at 3:57; and was pinned Sawyer McCarty, FA, at 4:37.

113 pounds — Gabe Bruns received a first-round bye; was pinned by Kaleb Nightingale, Buck, at 2:17; and was pinned by Austin Jackson, FA, at 0:32.

126 pounds — Timothy Smith received a first-round bye; was pinned by Clyde Carr, Matt, at 2:51; and was pinned by Grady Reardon, FA, at 1:43.

138 pounds — Jonah Lovejoy received a first-round bye; won by major decision over Caleb Robbins, Car, 9-0; was pinned by Logan Lord, Ells, at 2:55; pinned Colby Emery, Pis, at 3:21; and beat Josh Tatlock, FA, 15-8, in the consolation final. Lovejoy finished third.

145 pounds — Wyatt Staples was pinned by Everett Huckins, Ells, at 1:22; pinned Elizabeth Bernier, Buck, at 2:35; pinned Sean Fitzgerald, WA, at 2:03; and was pinned by Angel Riopelle, Car, at 4:14.

152 pounds — Patrick Curtis received a first-round bye; was pinned by Reece Pelletier, FK, at 3:54; pinned Adam Barnard, Cal, at 0:19; and was pinned by A.J. Atkinson, FA, at 3:33.

160 pounds — Elijah Charbonnier received a first-round bye; lost to Noah Hughes, Ells, 6-5; pinned Pacey Clark, Matt, at 0:17; pinned C.J. Roucheleau, FK, at 2:48; and beat Noah Hughes, Ells, 12-10, in the consolation final. Charbonnier finished third.

170 pounds — Nathaniel Porter received a first-round bye; was pinned by Gus Irwin, Dex, at 2:23; and lost to Sam Robinson, FA, 4-3, in the consolation final. Porter finished fourth.

182 pounds — Jason Norwood received a first-round bye; pinned Lucas Theriault, FK, at 1:01; pinned Charlie Hughes, Ells, at 3:55; and was pinned by Josiah Brown, WA, at 2:33 in the championship final. Norwood finished second.

195 pounds — Brian White received a first-round bye; beat Alex Munson, Matt, 11-5; lost by technical fall to Lucas Ames, FA, 24-8; beat Jordan Labbe, FK, 9-7; and beat Alex Munson, Matt, 7-0, in the consolation final. White finished third.

220 pounds — Cameron Watts received a first-round bye; pinned Chris Cobb, MDI, at 1:31; pinned Jacob Coghill, Buck, at 4:49; and beat Eric Bennett, Dex, 7-4, in the championship final. Watts finished first.

285 pounds — Shane Rumney received a first-round bye; was pinned by David Gross, Buck, at 2:11; pinned Tanner Rolfe, WA, at 0:49; and was pinned by Sam Hoff, MDI, at 1:41.
