Belfast — A group of local volunteer scuba divers recently gathered to collect trash and debris from the boat lift at Front Street Shipyard.

The May 6 clean-up effort, organized by Belfast Area High School senior Alexander Doyne-Ditmas, retrieved various lead weights, metal pieces similar to clamps or buckles, several sections of canvas sleeve strapping and other miscellaneous bits of wood and metal and a hand brush, according to BAHS social studies teacher Charles "Chip" Lagerbom.

"(A) good group of workers and great results!" Lagerbom wrote in an email message to The Republican Journal.

"We also did a shore and water clean-up from the Boathouse to the (city) landing for Earth Day," Lagerbom wrote. He described the diving club as "a loose collection of local divers called the Mid-Coast Maine Aqua-Nuts (as in you’ve got to be nuts to dive in Maine waters!)."

The group has about 70 members on an informal email chain that includes working divers, agency instructors and college professors, as well as recreational and sport divers.

"Pretty much every age and range of diver ability from the newbie to the vast experienced," Lagerbom said. " We have organized dives from Stockton Springs to Port Clyde, freshwater and salt and quarries.

"Always looking for more to join us (and for more sites to dive!)," he said.
