Mail it in for ‘Poetry & Art’

Mar 05, 2018
The annual “Poetry & Art” show fills the Good Tern Café with mailed-in works.

Rockland — April is National Poetry Month, and libraries, schools, bookstores and other venues are offering special exhibitions and events in honor of this. Lois Anne, curator of the Good Tern Café Gallery, is planning to have a mail in exhibition of poetry and art again this year, since the past six annual exhibitions and related events were so well received. The exhibition will run for the month of April.

The Good Tern Café Gallery usually features work by coop members, but for a mail art exhibition opens it up to the larger community. Past years' entries were received from as far away as South Carolina, Florida, the West Coast, the United Kingdom and western Ontario.

Anyone of any age who is interested to submit a piece or two or three for “Poetry & Art VII, A Mail Art Exhibition” is invited to do so. For a mail art exhibition, each participant creates a piece on a postcard and sends it in.

Entries may be poetry, visual art, poems inspired by sculptures, visual art about poetry, drawings inspired by poetry, poems by artists, visual art by poets, etc. — as long as it fits on a postcard of any size.

Submission guidelines for “Poetry & Art VII, A Mail Art Exhibition” are as follows. Submitters are invited to make a poem, painting, drawing, collage or other creation on a postcard (or in an envelope), relating however loosely to the theme of poetry and art. Entries, which may be signed or anonymous, must be postmarked by Saturday, March 24. Entries should be sent to: Lois Anne, Curator of Poetry & Art, P.O. Box 1661, Rockland, ME 04841.

Work in a mail art exhibition is usually not returned. However, for three weeks after this exhibition closes, the pieces will be available to be picked up at the Good Tern; those out of the area may send a self-addressed stamped envelope along with the entry.

Good Tern Natural Foods Co-op, 750 Main St., is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 9AM to 6PM and Sunday 10AM to 4PM. For more information, send email to with Poetry & Art in the subject line’ or call the Good Tern at 594-8822.
