Two students at the Waldo County Technical Center received cash prizes as winners of a poster design challenge offered to members of the school’s Graphic Designs class by the Maine Celtic Celebration. The winners were Kasey Annis from Belfast and Ilana Currier from Mountview, both seniors. The students were given basic specification for poster elements and encouraged to use their own ideas in creating the poster designs. The students submitted about 10 separate designs. The MCC Board of Directors had intended to pick only one winner but was impressed with elements of both Kasey and Alana’s designs. The board asked the two students to collaborate and combine their designs. Each young woman was awarded $200 for her work on the design. This design will appear on both posters and t-shirts that will be available at this year’s Maine Celtic Celebration on July 19 - 21 at the Belfast Common.

The Graphic Design course at the Waldo County Tech Center is one of 13 different programs offered to students from Belfast, Mount View, and Searsport High Schools. In Graphic Design, students learn artistic theory, develop creative thinking, and gain technical skills using industry standard software. The classes are project based; students design items such as posters, brochures, invitations, logos, packaging, and web graphics. Real projects come from both the partner schools and from the community. In addition to the Maine Celtic Celebration project, students have previously worked on a concert poster and program for the Penobscot Bay Singers, a logo coffee mug for the Tech Center, and graphics for a MaineAllCare event in Belfast. The Graphic Design program welcomes projects from the community because completing real projects helps students build both technical and relationship skills.
