Maine Ocean School Foundation to hold Captains' Dinner Aug. 10

Searsport — The Maine Ocean School Foundation is hosting its inaugural Captains’ Dinner at the Samoset Resort in Rockport Friday, Aug. 10. The fundraiser benefiting the Maine Ocean School in Searsport will feature keynote speaker Shashi Kumar, Ph.D., Master Mariner and the U.S. Department of Transportation's national coordinator for maritime education and training for the Maritime Administration.

The Maine Ocean School is a new public magnet high school for marine science, technology, transportation and management. It will be open to students from all over Maine.

Kumar brings together four decades of academic and maritime industry leadership experiences. He is the founding dean of the Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Logistics at the Maine Maritime Academy, where he is an emeritus professor, and the twelfth chief academic officer at the Merchant Marine Academy, where he also served three terms as the interim superintendent. Kumar has published extensively, including the 13 most recent editions (2004-2016) of Annual U.S. Merchant Marine and World Maritime Review for the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings.

He earned his doctorate from the University of Wales, U.K.; a master's degree from the Maine Maritime Academy and a bachelor's degree from the Indian Maritime Academy.

The dinner will include other speaking guests;including Chris Rector, regional representative for U.S. Senator Angus King, and Stacey Keefer, executive director of the Maine Marine Trades Association. There will be a cash bar at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6. Tickets for the fundraiser are $150 per person and can be arranged by contacting or James Gillway, foundation chairman, at 323-3250 by Aug. 3.
