Maine Ocean School offers summer program for prospective students

May 31, 2018

Searsport — Maine Ocean School, Maine’s newest public magnet high school, will host a week-long summer program to introduce high school students to its ocean-themed curriculum set to begin this September.

The fun-filled six-day program will be held July 30 through Aug. 4. It's open to Maine high school students entering ninth and 10th grade who have a passion for the ocean and are interested in pursuing a marine-related career after graduation.

Students will travel the coast of Maine and participate in hands-on marine activities, tours and more. Attendance is limited to 15, and the cost per student is $300. Applications are available at maineoceanschool.org.

The Maine Ocean School Foundation has received a $2,500 grant from the Emily and William Muir Community Fund and Waldo County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. This grant will be used to support Maine Ocean School’s summer outreach marketing campaign to help bring life to the vision of an actively engaging and challenging, ocean-themed magnet school.

“We are really in the pioneering phase of our organization,” said Capt. Eric Jergenson, chairman of Maine Ocean School’s Board of Trustees. “These initial gifts from foundations such as the Maine Community Foundation are allowing us to reach out and promote greater student and community engagement.”

Maine Ocean School will welcome a total of 30 Maine students entering grades nine through 11 when it opens this fall. The school will offer specialized tracks in marine science, marine transportation, marine engineering, and marine management. Students will have hands-on experiences that will position them for successful careers in the marine industry, or higher education, after graduation.

Maine high school students with a passion for the ocean and interest in pursuing a marine-related career are urged to complete the school’s admissions application at maineoceanschool.org.
