Mariner girls, Lion boys walk off court happy with wins

Oceanside boys, Belfast girls a bit more somber after tough losses

The Oceanside and Belfast basketball teams earned a split on the hardwood in a pair of midseason Class B North contests on Thursday night, Jan. 10, as the hosts defended their courts.

On the girls side, the Mariners netted a 61-40 victory over the Lions in Rockland, while the Lion boys clawed to a 54-46 win over the Mariners in Belfast.

Girls

Oceanside 61, Belfast 40

At Rockland Jan. 9, the Mariners went on a 21-12 run in the second quarter, which helped the hosts pull away from the Lions. Oceanside led 11-4, 32-16 and 49-27 at the quarter breaks.

Abby Waterman led Oceanside with a strong 19-point, 14-rebound performance, while Audrey Mackie (14 points), Grace Woodman (11 points), Molly Gould (9 points), Ahlivia Morris (2 points), Emily Sykes (2 points), Katherine Freeman (2 points), Anna Kingsbury (point) and Abby Hersey (point) also chipped in for the hosts.

Grace Fitzjurls bouyed Belfast with 14 points, while Lillie Mitchell and Kiara Doolan added seven; Natalie Hamlin and Halle Tripp, three; and Kayci Faulkingham, Madison Goodwin and Hailee Lindelof, two.

The Mariners netted 15-of-24 (62 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Lions were 13-of-32 (41 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Oceanside (7-3, 21-4815 points) is seventh, while Belfast (1-8, 1.1728 points) is 16th Hermon (10-0, 53.8272 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Boys

Belfast 54, Oceanside 46

At Belfast Jan. 10, the Lions poured in an abundance of points from the free-throw line, which helped the hosts net a midseason win over the Mariners. Belfast led 13-8 after the first quarter and 27-18 at halftime, while the foes were tied 39-39 at the end of three quarters.

The Lions then went 11-of-12 (92 percent) from the foul line in the final stanza to pull away.

Chris Kelley led Belfast with 17 points, while Pat McConnell added 12; Jason Bartlett, 10; Tanner Veilleux, six; Drew Abelon, five; and Chase Sanders, four.

Drew Daggett keyed Oceanside with 10 points, while Cam Kingsbury and Nate Coombs added nine; and Everett Allyn, Aidan Munro and Bohdi Ames six.

The Lions connected on 21-of-28 (75 percent) from the foul line, while the Mariners were 2-of-6 (33 percent), all of which came from Ames.

Thus, the Lions outscored the Mariners 21-2 from the charity stripe, but were outscored 44-33 from the floor.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Oceanside (4-6, 11.2346 points) is 13th, while Belfast (5-4, 7.5926 points) is 15th. Caribou (9-0, 50.1997 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs.
