Eddington, Maine — Mary Elizabeth (Bette) Smith Knight, passed away June 15, 2020, at home.

She was born Sept. 5, 1929, in Southington, Conn., to Bernard Lee Smith and Elizabeth (Blake) Smith.

Bette attended Lauralton Hall in Milford, Conn., from grade three until graduating from high school. She also attended the University of Connecticut, studied piano at Julius Hartt School of Music and graduated from New Haven State Teachers College.

On July 29, 1950, Bette married James Adelbert Knight, son of Burt L. and Elise Elliott Knight of Manchester, Conn., and Belfast, Maine, at the Dwight Memorial Chapel, Yale University, New Haven, Conn.

After the reception, Bette and Jim left for their honeymoon trip along the coast of Maine, spending the second week at the Knight family cottage in Belfast. It was there that they returned on July 29, 2000, to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Members of the family gathered for a dinner party at the home of David and Brenda (Knight) Ahlberg, East Side Battery, Belfast.

Bette was predeceased by her father, mother, stepfather John F. Cipriano, grandmother Mary Kay Blake, Uncle Gordon Blake of West Palm Beach, Fla., her dear sister-in-law Mildred Lisk of Falmouth, Mass., and her special cousin Margaret C. Kay of Allston, Mass., and Eastport, Maine.

She leaves two sons, Craig C. Knight, of Eddington and Larry Knight and wife Kathy of Hudson, N.H.; two grandchildren, Bryan J. Knight and wife Jenn of Reading, Mass., and Kate Knight Dupuis and husband Timothy of Nottingham, N.H.; and four great-grandchildren, Everett, Julian and Aria Dupuis and Elise Knight.

Bette leaves nieces Brenda Ahlberg, Elizabeth Karbott, Carol Zapadka, Susan Lisk, Frances Gutter-Lisk MacAllister and many others. She also leaves lifelong friends Clara Palleria and Wanda Lalashuis and other friends, John Bell, Betty Hogan Ford, Norma Allegri, Mary Blake, Fran Star, Mary Lou Prentice, Ann Werkhoven, Laura Volz, Ruth Shute Ballance, Alice Lettiere, Jeanne Gail, Mike and Bobbie Hudson, Donna Dondzik, Joan Wilson, Tom and Dale Schuetz, Lori Macri, Jeane Elizabeth Bonenfant, and a new and special friend, Maura Colville Weed.

A burial service will take place at Grove Cemetery in Belfast. Date and time will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to St. Jude’s Children's Hospital or Bangor Humane Society.
