Medal of Honor Remembrance Park dedicated

Jun 04, 2018

On June 2, a special dedication ceremony was held at Wreaths Across America in Columbia Falls. An 8-acre tract there will now be a Remembrance Park. It is situated on the tip land where the balsam is harvested to create the wreaths that are placed on veterans' graves at Arlington National Cemetery each December by the Wreaths Across America Escort to Arlington Convoy.

Special guests were Medal of Honor and Purple Heart recipient Col. Roger Donlon, U.S. Army retired 7th Special Forces Group Vietnam veteran, and his wife Norma, a Gold Star Spouse (her first husband, Lt. John Irving, was killed in Vietnam in May 1965).

Col. Donlon was the first Vietnam veteran and Army Special Forces Green Beret to receive the Medal of Honor. President Lyndon B. Johnson awarded the Medal of Honor to then-Capt. Donlon at the White House on Dec. 5, 1964, for Valor during the battle at Nam Dong. You can learn more about Col. Donlon’s service and sacrifice through his two books: "Beyond Nam Dong" and "Outpost of Freedom."
