Waldoboro — The Medomak Valley girls sixth-grade travel basketball team knows how to throw a party, which it did at its double-elimination tournament on Saturday and Sunday, March 30-31 at Medomak Valley High School.

Seven teams, many which call the Midcoast home, vied for the coveted crown, but, as is typically the case, Medomak prevailed as it went unbeaten through four games and defeated Belfast in the final to claim the event’s championship.

Watch video and see more than 100 photos below.

The tourney was for fifth- and sixth-grade squads.

The Medomak fifth-grade team also participated, as did squads from Mount Desert Island, Five Town, Mount View of Thorndike and Midcoast Rising Tide of Rockland.

During the travel team season, the Medomak sixth-graders finished 19-3, as they won three tournaments and finished second in two others.

Medomak’s Kytana Williamson was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while Belfast’s Kaelynn Beeton also was honored as the tourney’s best defender.

A halfcourt shootout raffle also ensued at halftime of games played in the tournament, with the shooter who made a basket to win a cake.

One of the event’s referees, Heath Commeau, made a halfcourt shot at halftime of the first game of the tournament, but deferred the prize so the raffle could continue. The cake was won later in the tournament by, of course, Kytana Willamson, who drained a halfcourt heave.
