Belfast — The Old Professor’s Bookshop invites the public to this month’s free Shop Talk by sustainability pioneer, author, lecturer and organizer Jim Merkel Saturday, June 23, beginning 3 p.m. in the Abbott Room of Belfast Free Library, 106 High St.

Merkel, author of “Radical Simplicity, Small Footprints on a Finite Earth,” will describe his experiences creating a documentary film on small families, small footprints and healthy people in Cuba, Slovenia and India. The talk will feature on-the-scene video clips.

Merkel’s film explores two of humanity’s sacred cows: “be fruitful and multiply”; and “he or she who dies with the most toys wins.” Together, they drive a lemming-like rush to wreck the environment. In contrast, viewers will be treated to an insider’s glimpse of societies that exhibit sustainable practices.
