Mid-Coast Tech officially opens doors

Cooperative tech space planned

Belfast — Mayor Samantha Paradis cut the ribbon Nov. 28 to officially open Mid-Coast Tech, Belfast's newest computer repair and service center, located in the Foster's Family Pet Center plaza on Starrett Drive.

The shop provides onsite tech support, including malware and virus removal, software installation, hardware upgrades and service to network and servers. Technicians repair laptops, PCs and Macintosh computers, as well as service iPhones, iPads, smartphones and tablets.

Regional Operations Director Shawn Myers said eventually they would like to establish a cooperative office work space, using the adjacent empty store (formerly Sears) for people who need space but don't want the expense of setting up their own office.

It would be a "shared tech space" where people can have meetings, use Wi-Fi and be more productive, Myers said. "Right now we're finding folks that want it and building out from there. And the parking is a plus."

Myers moved to the area three years ago, while working remotely for AngelCom IT Services of Lakewood, Washington. He rented shared office space and realized how the community would benefit from more cooperative-style work arrangements. Myers put out an ad and met Tech Support Engineer Alex Barnes, who had his own company, Mid-Coast Tech.

Myers and Barnes formed a coalition with the new tagline, "Mid-Coast Tech — Powered by AngelCom IT Services."

Barnes has been consulting all-things-tech for the past 14 years and says he does a "little bit of everything." He said the new venture has been open since June, and most of its business has been half walk-in traffic and half remote support.

What sets them apart from others?

"We are knowledgeable and friendly," Barnes said.

Myers added, "accessibility and extended support," referring to the tech team on the West Coast that backs up the Belfast office on remote support calls.

"We provide free evaluations and we want everyone to be happy," Myers said. "If someone feels they haven't received the best service, we will make it right."

JBlack Printing has signed on to provide quality printing and design options for Mid-Coast Tech operations with a hopeful "up and running" timeline of next spring, according to co-owner Mike Keyes. A large printer is positioned in a corner office to service the cooperative office with printing solutions.

"It's inspiring," the mayor said. "It creates community. There's a lot of interest in Belfast for a co-working space. I'm looking forward to seeing this business grow in Belfast."
