Midcoast Conservancy offers nature writing workshop series

May 25, 2019

WALDOBORO/PALERMO/JEFFERSON — English teacher and writing instructor Melissa Barbour will lead a series of writing workshops this summer, beginning on Tuesday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m, Participants are welcome to sign up for one, some or all of this series of nature-focused classes. Barbour’s approach starts with the belief that everyone is a writer; no experience is necessary, just the desire to explore the creative process. Class writing prompts are designed to inspire all, and provide opportunities to celebrate the natural world.

Barbour said, “So many times, I think about the multitudes of stories about our watersheds that will never be heard because no one listened, and/or no one wrote the stories down. This summer, for six Tuesdays, we will go to wild places of our memories and preserve some of those precious and important stories. Through creative journaling, practice, sharing, and, ultimately on-line production, stories of our special places will not end when we do.”

Two of the classes will be held at local nature preserves. The class schedule is as follows: June 25, Introduction to Creative Journaling and Writing for Posterity, Midcoast Conservancy’s Waldoboro office; July 9, Lists: Great for getting started and reluctant writers, Palermo Preserve, Palermo; July 16, Unsent Letters: Who inspired your love for nature?, Waldoboro office; July 23, Dialogue: Let the Preserve Speak, Hidden Valley Nature Center, Jefferson; July 30, Poetry and Music: “The Mary Poppins Experience” Take #2, Waldoboro office; and August 6, Pair and Share and Exhibit, Waldoboro office. All classes run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The workshops are free; participants just need to bring their own notebooks. Classes will be limited so early registration is recommended. To learn more, or to sign up, go to midcoastconservancy.org/events/summer-writing-workshops/ or call 389-5150.
