Hampton Beach, N.H. — The Midcoast Elite ninth-grade boys, who include a bundle of standout area basketball athletes, finished as runners-up in the talent-laden Zero Gravity Winter Championships on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27-28 at The Rim Sports Complex.

The team, made up of players from Oceanside in Rockland, Camden Hills in Rockport and Mount View in Thorndike, also finished second in the Northern New England Championships in Saco this season.

Midcoast Elite competes against programs made up of athletes from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Southern Maine.

In the Zero Gravity event, Midcoast started with a 54-18 win over Seacoast New Hampshire, as Cohen Galley tallied 12 points; Carter Cohen, 10; Connor Sides, eight; Wyatt Evensen and Ben Tripp, six; Josh Vallee, five; Caleb Kennedy, four; and Dylan Benner, three.

Midcoast's second game was a competitive battle against perennial power HST of the Boston, Mass. area and last year's top-ranked team for Zero Gravity in New England. In the end, HST defeated Midcoast 68-56. For the locals, Cohen Galley poured in 19 points; Carter Galley, 12; Sides, nine; Evensen, six; Tripp and Vallee, four; and Caleb Kennedy, two.

In the semifinals, a battle to advance to the championship game, Midcoast outlasted New Hampshire Spartans 69-65. The contest was not decided until the final seconds when Sides rebounded his own missed foul shot and ran out the clock.

Midcoast trailed by 10 points early but battled back with steady perimiter shooting and penetrating the Spartans' pressure defense to, ultimately, feed the post players for lap ups

For Midcoast, Cohen Galley tallied 21 points; Sides, 15; Carter Galley, 14; Vallee, eight; Kennedy, five; Evensen, four; and Tripp, two.

In the championship game, a rematch with HST, Midcoast again trailed by double-digits, this time 22-6, but climbed back with steady perimeter shooting, solid guard play and gritty defense.

Midcoast rallied to take the lead with two minutes to go and had a good look at a three-pointer to win the game at the end of regulation. However, the locals, ultimately, fell 65-63 in overtime.

For Midcoast, Sides tallied 19 points; Carter Galley, 15; Cohen Galley, 12; Vallee, seven; Kennedy, six; and Tripp, four.
