Weather Brief Jan 29, 2019

Midcoast Forecast - January 29, 2019

Tuesday started off sunny but cold with temperatures down into the single digits followed by highs only into the upper teens and low 20s during the afternoon. The cold moved in as Canadian high pressure pushed in from the north but this system is exiting east as our next storm system approaches. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Tuesday night through Wednesday morning for the coast with a Winter Storm Warning for inland locations.

An area of low pressure is moving east out of the Great Lakes Tuesday pushing toward New England with increasing clouds across the Midcoast during the afternoon. The clouds will lead to light snow during the early night as the center of the low draws closer with snow picking up through the late night and into Wednesday morning. As the snow rate increases through the night, so will temperatures causing a change to rain along the coast after midnight that will last into Wednesday keeping snow totals down near the water. The immediate coast will likely see a trace to 2" of snow with much of that melting due to the rain that follows. Inland locations could see up to 6 inches of snow with higher amounts for northern and western Maine. Precipitation will end by the late morning and stay quiet through Wednesday afternoon with some sunshine peaking through. An arctic cold front will move through during the early night that will bring one last round of snow with an additional dusting possible. Cold air will rush in behind this front along brisk west winds that will drop temperatures back either side of 0 by Thursday morning with wind chill values of -10 to -20.

Arctic high pressure will take hold over the region through the late week and into the weekend with sunny skies and temperatures in the single digits for lows and highs in the teens. Temperatures will climb back into the upper 30s Sunday as low pressure moves in with a round of snow and rain mix late in the day. We'll see some clearing on Monday with rain likely for Tuesday with highs around 40.
