Rockport — The Midcoast Ice Cats regular season has been put on ice, as the cooperative high school ice hockey squad skated to an impressive 11-2 record.

The 'Cats team members, led by coach Parker Spear, included Andrew Donald of Searsport District High School; Zane Boulet, Yanic Boulet and Dominic Rodrigue of Erskine Academy of South China; Vincent Bonarrigo and Thomas Parker of Belfast Area High School; Ethan Reed and Zackery Benner of Medomak Valley; Alton Coolidge of Lincoln Academy of Newcastle; and Caleb Powell, Jeret Winchenbach, Kolya Philbrook and Jameson Bell of Oceanside High School of Rockland.

The Ice Cats play a mostly junior varsity schedule and have home games at the Midcoast Recreation Center rink.

The Ice Cats won their first six games of the season, went 0-2 in a pair of tough losses to Camden Hills and Kents Hill before going on a five-game win streak to end the campaign.

“I had a blast [coaching],” said Spear, who was assisted by coach Peter Clapp. “The guys Peter and I got the chance to coach were a great group of young men. The veteran players really helped me out being a new coach in practice and games. The new guys we had took to the ice well and we saw all of them score their first goals.”

The 25-year-old Spear, a former Ice Cats player, “It took some getting used to being behind the bench during games and not out there skating and battling with the guys.”

He added he hopes to return to coach the team next season.
