One called Kno-Wal-Lin 2021 COVID Basketball Tournament, other Class C/D Coastal Pod Championship
By Staff | Feb 19, 2021

They will not have the same feel as the traditional and historic Maine Principals' Association high school postseason invitational basketball tournaments, but playoff hoops is on the way for Midcoast court squads.

Teams from Oceanside of Rockland Camden Hills of Rockport, Belfast, Mount View of Thorndike, Searsport and Medomak Valley of Waldoboro will be in action on the hardwood, with playoff games set to begin on Monday, March 1.

Five of the six area schools — namely, Oceanside, Camden Hills, Belfast, Mount View and Medomak Valley — will compete in the Kno-Wal-Lin 2021 COVID Basketball Tournament. Boothbay Region may be the sixth school involved in the tournament, but that decision has yet to be made by BRHS officials.

Lincoln Academy of Newcastle opted not to participate.

The playoffs will be a three-round, single-elimination tournament, with the highest-seeded team to host games. The seeds will be determined first by winning percentage, then head-to-head competition, then the winner of second game for head-to-head competition and, if necessary, a coin flip.

The first round will be on Thursday, March 4, the second round on Saturday, March 6 and the championship on Tuesday, March 9.

Tuesday, March 2 is the final day regular-season games are being played for teams within this "pod" or region.

If a team cannot play in the tourney due to COVID-19 concerns, the team will forfeit its playoff opportunity.

Searsport also will participate in a playoff "pod" — loosely being called the Class C/D Coastal Pod Championship — with Bucksport, Sumner of East Sullivan, Deer Isle-Stonington and George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill.

Monday, March 1 will be a prelim game between the fourth and fifth seeds, while Wednesday, March 3 will be the semifinal round and Friday, March 5 the pod championships.

Seedings will be determined by winning percentage with head-to-head matchups as a tiebreaker. The higher-seeded teams will host games.

Searsport’s final scheduled regular-season games are Thursday, Feb. 25 against Deer Isle-Stonington.
