Belfast — A Montville man accused of propositioning two young boys in a Belfast City Park has been found guilty of solicitation.

According to WABI, a jury on June 26 convicted 76-year-old Edmund Melanson of solicitation of a child to commit a prohibited act.

The incident occurred on March 29, 2018. Melanson was identified after police released a description of a man with white hair, glasses, a ponytail and a hat.

Frank Gormley of Belfast Police Department said neither of the boys hesitated when identifying Melanson from a photo lineup.

Police said in March of last year, Melanson approached the boys and offered to perform sexual acts on them.

The boys ran away and told a man and woman who were walking in the park what had happened. Police released a description of the ponytailed man based on interviews with the couple and the boys.

Melanson was arrested on a warrant July 18, 2018, and charged with solicitation to commit a prohibited act, a Class D misdemeanor.

A sentencing date has not yet been set, but according to the WABI report, he will have to register for 10 years as a sex offender.
