Moore prints in Kramer Gallery

“Stacked Stones in Snow” is four-color linocut print by Belfast artist Leslie Moore.

Belfast — “Paper, Ink, and Bamboo Spoon,” a show of block prints by Leslie Moore, is on display through Jan. 19 in the ground-floor Kramer Gallery of Belfast Free Library, 106 High St.

Belfast resident Moore’s passion for printmaking was ignited at a one-day workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts 10 years ago. The longtime pen-and-ink artist said working in reverse fascinated her.

“Instead of putting down black marks with a pen, I was carving out white marks with a v-gouge. I’ve been making relief prints ever since, carving images into wood and linoleum blocks, inking my blocks, and pulling each print by hand,” she said.

Moore lauds the low-tech, non-toxic process that demands “more patience than I have” and lots of elbow grease. She does not have a printing press.

“Instead I use the back of a bamboo spoon to rub water-soluble inks from my blocks onto the paper,” she said

The Kramer Gallery is open during library hours. For more information, visit belfastlibrary.org.
