Belmont — Policy say a Winterport man was killed Sept. 27 after being ejected from his motorcycle.

Michael Bennett, 72, was traveling east on Augusta Road at 3 p.m. when a Ford Focus, heading west, attempted to make a left turn onto Fenwick Road. The driver of the Focus, 76-year-old Alberna Bunker of Belmont failed to yield the right of way, forcing Bennett to attempt to avoid a collision, according to a news release from Waldo County Sheriff's Office.

However, Bennett "laid down" his motorcycle and was ejected, police said. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Bennett was taken to Waldo County General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Deputy Kevin Littlefield is investigating the crash, which remains under investigation. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors at this time, police said.

According to the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, there have been eight other motorcycle deaths this month on Maine roads. This year’s total for motorcycle deaths now stands at 20.

The overall highway death toll for the year is now 124, compared to 105 at this time last year. The Bureau of Highway Safety noted in a press release Sept. 27 that August and September were deadly months on Maine roads — 22 people died in traffic crashes in August, and, including Bennett's, there have been 24 highway deaths so far this month.
