Mount View, Searsport toil in preseason Viking hoop event

Mustangs, Vikings start regular seasons in coming days

Searsport — Searsport hosted a preseason basketball tournament on Saturday, Dec. 2 in an event that included Mount View of Thorndike and Carrabec of North Anson.

The Viking boys finished 2-0 on the day and girls 0-2, while the Mustang boys went 1-1 and girls 2-0. The Cobra boys finished 0-2 and the Cobra girls 1-1.

The following is a summary of reported games:

Boys basketball

Searsport 45, Carrabec 35

At Searsport Dec. 2, the Vikings netted a 10-point win over the Cobras. Carrabec led 7-5 after the first quarter, while Searsport rallied to take a 21-18 lead at halftime and a 30-27 edge after three quarters.

Harold Merithew led the Vikings with 11 points, while Liam MacMillan added eight; Connor Kneeland and Charlie Spiegel, seven; and Ben Powell and Colby Snow, six. Snow also pulled down a whopping 16 rebounds and Powell 12 caroms.

Alex Stafford scored 16 points for the Cobras, while Dylan Ouellette added 10; Evan Holzworth, five; and Thomas Crane and Mike Hargreaves, two.

Searsport was 8-of-12 (67 percent) from the foul line, while Carrabec netted 4-of-9 (44 percent).

Searsport 39, Mount View 32

At Searsport Dec. 2, the Vikings edged the Mustangs in a showdown between two Waldo County squads. Searsport led 12-11, 25-18 and 30-21 at the quarter breaks.

Liam MacMillan scored 16 points for Searsport, while Ben Powell added eight; Colby Snow, seven; Charlie Spiegel, five; Harold Merithew, two; and Connor Kneeland, one. Snow also had 11 rebounds in the win.

Brennan Grant scored 10 points for Mount View, while Adam Reed, Kyle Noble and Logan Curtis added six and Matt Overlock four.

The Vikings were 14-of-27 (52 percent) from the foul line and the Mustangs 1-of-2 (50 percent).

Mount View 67, Carrabec 51

At Searsport Dec. 2, the Mustangs stampeded the Cobras. Mount View led 15-12, 35-25 and 45-34 at the quarter breaks.

Adam Reed scored 13 points for Mount View, while Kyle Noble tallied 12; Logan Curtis, 11; Matt Overlock, seven; Brennan Grant and Max Tomlin, six; Garrett Smith, five; Jordan Brown, four; and Josh Larrabee, two.

Evan Holzworth netted 22 points for Carrabec, while Alex Stafford added 12; Dylan Willette, eight; Bradley Clark, four; Michael Hargreaves, three; and Lucas Murray, two.

The ‘Stangs were 9-of-14 (64 percent) from the foul line, while the Cobras were 14-of-22 (63 percent).

Girls

Mount View 35, Carrabec 25

At Searsport Dec. 2, the Mustangs galloped past the Cobras by a 10-point margin. Mount View led 6-2, 18-8 and 27-10 at the quarter breaks.

Andrea Crosby led Mount View with 18 points, while Shala Davis added nine and Paula Miller and Alex Fountain four.

Skye Welch scored six points for Carrabec, while Maddie Hughes, Caitlin Crawford and Olivia Fournier added five and Ashley Cates four.

Mount View was 5-of-8 (62 percent) from the foul line and Carrabec 0-of-3.

Mount View 43, Searsport 23

At Searsport Dec. 2, the Mustangs pulled away in the fourth quarter and prevailed over the Vikings. Searsport led 7-6 after the first quarter, while Mount View led 14-13 at halftime and 22-15 after three quarters.

Shala Davis netted 17 points for the ‘Stangs, while Andrea Crosby added 15; Alex Fountain, six; and Sophia King, five.

Casey Snow scored eight points for the Vikings, while Audrey Walker added four; Abby Stemp and Makenzie Alley, three; Ashten Wells and Morgan Ireland, two; and Brooklynn Alberts, one.

Searsport was 13-of-21 (62 percent) from the foul line, while Mount View was 3-of-5 (60 percent).

Mark has been covering local sports throughout Knox, Waldo and part of Lincoln county since 2007. Haskell has a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication from the University of Maine and is also a 2000 graduate of Rockland District High School. He has won multiple Maine Press Association awards for writing and photography.

Mark loves the Boston Red Sox, iced coffee, cargo shorts and time with friends and family.

He resides in Thomaston with his wife Jenn, his sons Beckett and Austin and daughter Lila.
