Belfast — When it comes to athletic rivalry games, one usually expects a close contest.
The first time Mount View and Belfast met in the 2021 regular season, players, coaches and fans received a down-to-the-wire affair, as the Mustangs earned a 53-47 victory at home on Feb. 1.
The most recent meeting on Saturday, Feb. 20, the 32-minute, up-and-down-the-court, fast-paced affair, stayed close for the first quarter-and-a-half, but the Mustangs took their own reins and raced into, and out, of halftime for a 85-59 victory.
Mount View, which improved to 7-4 on the campaign, led 17-11, 40-25 and 62-41 at the quarter breaks. Belfast dropped to 4-7.
The Mustangs received a balanced attack, as 10 players registered in the scorebook, led by Draedyn Furrow with 17 points, while Joe Grassi and Declan Knowlton added 15; Noah Hurd, Tyler Russell and R.J. Chadwick, eight; Sean Raven, seven; Ben Osborne, Kyle Ingraham and Wyatt Evensen, two; and Ryan Oliver, one. Hurd and Russell netted treys for the visitors.
Belfast also saw nine players score, led by Jason Bartlett's 19 points, while Tanner Veilleux added 10; Drew Abelon, eight; James Ritter and Zeb Leppenen, five; Tommy Walker, four; Chase Sanders and Eamon Goscinski, three; and Cole Martin, two. Abelon hit two three-pointers for the hosts, while Leppenen, Goscinski, Walker and Bartlett one.
Mount View was 15-of-22 (68 percent) from the foul line, while Belfast was 9-of-16 (56 percent).
The first quarter was reminiscent of the first meeting between the Waldo County rivals, as the teams played a fast-paced style of offense.
Bartlett knocked down a three to start the game 30 seconds in, and Furrow netted the Mustangs' first points with a basket.
After trading free throws, Furrow found Knowlton for an uncontested layup to give the Mustangs their first lead.
Bartlett found Veilleux on the Lions' next possession to retake the lead, 6-5, with 5:15 to play in the opening stanza.
Grassi grabbed an offensive board a minute later and scored a putback bucket to push the Mustangs out front by a nose, 7-6, before Furrow drove the right baseline, missed the shot, grabbed the offensive carom on the left baseline and finished.
Grassi blocked Walker's shot on the Lions' next possession, and scored a layup in traffic on the other end as the Mustangs' advantage grew to three with 3:20 to play.
The Lions knocked the deficit to two with 1:37 left in the first quarter, but Mount View's Russell found Evensen for a layup, before Hurd hit a runner off glass the next time down — after three Mustang offensive rebounds — to push the lead to 17-11.
The crisp passes and scoring continued for Mount View to open the second quarter, as Furrow fired a pass from the right-wing into the low post to Ingraham for an easy bucket.
After a missed Lion free throw, Mount View's Raven sat alone in the offensive end for another easy basket, as the Mustang advantage grew to 21-11.
The visitors from Thorndike added another basket to complete a 10-0 run, as Veilleux knocked down a fallaway from the free-throw line to stop the bleeding.
As the second-quarter clock ticked down, the visitors continued their offensive barrage, and defensive intensity, to grow their halftime advantage to 15. And they continued to add to the score as the game went on, as Belfast could not gain footing.
