Thorndike — Police cited speed as the cause of a crash this morning that killed a 16-year-old driver from Liberty.

The crash was reported just after 8 a.m. on North Mountain Valley Highway in Montville, according to a press release from Waldo County Sheriff's Office Lt. Matthew Curtis. Mount View student Riley Boulay, a junior, died at the scene. He had been on his way to school before the crash near Randlett and Morse roads. Boulay was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle north when he lost control of the vehicle, which left the road and struck multiple trees. He was the only occupant of the car.

Responders from the sheriff's office, Montville and Freedom Fire Departments, Liberty Rescue and a paramedic from Belfast all were dispatched to the scene. The crash remains under investigation by Deputy Kevin Littlefield.

Regional School Unit 3 mobilized its crisis response team and dismissed several students Wednesday morning after learning of the crash.

RSU 3 Assistant Superintendent Jean Skorapa said the district's crisis response team, composed of administrators and district health workers, has been helping students and staff members. The school will remain open until 7 p.m., she said. All after-school activities are canceled.
